The client wants it now, but hasn’t clearly defined what "it" is; there’s very little budget and everyone’s screaming at you.
If that’s your experience of managing projects then this course is for you. Please see the course description for details.
St Helena has both a local need and international obligations to prevent and detect money laundering. The 2008 Ordinance sets stiff penalties for anyone who fails to meet these obligations, even accidentally and through ignorance of their responsibilities. This course explains all you need to know to protect yourself, and to do you bit in protecting St Helena.
This course is for everyone on St Helena who engages in any form of trade. Please see the course description for details.
We continue to extend our range of courses. Recently we have added ‘Effective Office Administration’ and ‘Designing Effective Induction Programmes’.
If there’s a course you think we should be offering please contact us with your suggestions.
Conflict is not only a normal part of life, it’s a necessary one too. If people didn’t sometimes disagree there would be no progress. Constructive conflict leads to a sharpening of ideas; destructive conflict can destroy teamwork and damage individuals.
This course helps those who manage groups of people, or work within those groups, to distinguish between constructive and destructive conflict, and to promote the former while dealing effectively with the latter.

Burgh House Limited has today filed the following response to the St Helena Airport consultation.
Replying for and on behalf of Burgh House Limited, registered in St Helena as Private Limited Company number 32 (Director)
Burgh House Limited provides business solutions - See the Burgh House website for details
Selected option: A - build the airport without delay
Question 1: What is your view on the three options above?
A is the only option that will allow St Helena’s continued existence. B and C will result in continuing decline and the British government will be seen to have shirked its responsibilities to its overseas territories.
Question 2: How would each of the three options affect you, or the organisation that you represent?
A: provides a future for Burgh House Limited, for myself, my family and the island of St Helena. The island will prosper. The relative poverty of islanders will be relieved. Health provision will be improved. The island will be able to move out of dependency.
B: provides no future for Burgh House Limited, for myself, my family and the island of St Helena. The island will remain an economic backwater. People will continue to leave. Services will become unsustainable. Infrastructure will collapse. The island will become a burial ground.
C: provides no future for Burgh House Limited, for myself, my family and the island of St Helena. After five years the decline will be irreversible and all of the Option B consequences will be inevitable. Option C merely prolongs the agony.
Question 3: Before he reaches a decision, is there any other relevant information or proposals that the Secretary of State for International Development should take into account?
That the people of St Helena are British citizens, who have loyally supported their government in Britain for hundreds of years, in peacetime and in war, and who therefore deserve to be treated as a priority by the British government.
We have now introduced two new training courses for St Helena: ‘Effective Minute Taking’ and ‘Assertiveness At Work’. Details are in our updated Training Course Catalogue and both are available for your business or other organisation.
Associated with the course ‘Assertiveness At Work’ you can download a simple Assertiveness Quiz from our Burgh House Software website.
For a full list of the courses we can offer please see our Training Catalogue.
Catherine Turner was invited to speak at the AVES Awards Ceremony on 8th April 2009. This is a summary of what she told the assembled participants:

Close your eyes and Just imagine… How would you feel if you went to the doctor with a problem and he or she said “I don’t know about this - I never had any training. But I’m sure I can figure it out eventually”.
The world over we take people and train them to be Doctors, Architects, Engineers, Teachers, Mechanics, Electricians, Cooks or any of the many other trades and professions.
And when they become skilled and experienced in their chosen field we promote them to become administrators and managers. But do we then give them training for their new role? Sadly, very often we do not.
Businesses and governments around the world promote people to senior roles and expect them to assimilate somehow the necessary skills; how to plan, write reports, motivate their teams, select and train good staff.
At Burgh House we believe this is not good enough. We believe everyone deserves the training they need to do their job, whatever it may be.
And not only should we offer them appropriate training when they start.
Professionals and tradespersons get regular training in the latest techniques and the latest tools. At Burgh House we passionately believe managers, administrators and decision makers should have the same opportunity. There is always something to learn; experiences to share, new things to do or a better way to do something. The world changes and we need to change with it.
We thank AVES for giving us the opportunity to bring this training to some of the managers of St Helena.
But if all that sounds terribly serious, let me tell you we have some fun too. We have a strict confidentiality rule about what happens during our courses so I can’t be too specific, but suffice to say that we’ve found a great way to get drivers to slow down when the go past Pilling School, and I still smile every time I hear one of our fowls laying an egg.
From a personal perspective, we have had a wonderful time training and have met some very special people. To you all I say that Burgh House is proud to have had the privilege of working with you all. I hope that your line managers and Heads of Department recognise those talents in you and have seen you develop as a result of your time with us. For everyone else; if you think about it, maybe you too might benefit from investing the time you deserve to help you reach your full potential as a manager.
